Can South Africa Avoid a Covid-19 Fourth Wave ?

Medical experts have predicted that South Africa should expect a fourth wave of coronavirus infections to start on Dec. 2 and to last about 75 days, Salim Abdool Karim, former chairman of the government’s ministerial advisory committee on Covid-19. While this prediction is based on various analysis, the question on the mind of South Africans is whether this fourth wave can the avoided? Given the resurgence of Delta variant globally and the possibility of other variants in the coming months, it is very likely that this prediction may materialise. However, this can be avoided should the nation continue to adhere to non pharmaceutical measures like wearing of mask, social distancing, washing of hands and also speed up the vaccination efforts.

The government is assuming that should the fourth wave materialise, it will follow a similar pattern to that of the third wave and that there will be a new variant by then, he said in a Government Technical Advisory Centre conference.
